Simplify pre-trip planning for your next outdoor adventure or business trip by using MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager to transfer waypoints, routes and tracks between your Garmin GPS and PC. Simply plan your next trip on a PC, download GPS data to your Garmin unit, and go.
Just select the option to download your NEXT map update to the GPS and to your Computer, or redownload the last map update you did, making sure to use that option or the option to download to your computer only. Mapsource is no longer being maintained by Garmin and they are recommending you use their Basecamp software. If you download and install Basecamp you get all the features of Mapsource, plus some additional items, AND you simply attach your Nuvi to your computer and use the map stored on it. No need to download maps to your PC. @bobkz, Many people still prefer Mapsource over BaseCamp because they find it an easier, more friendly program to use. If you have never used either than it is probably just as easy for you to start with BaseCamp. I think Mapsource requires you to already have the maps on your PC so redownload your map update from the Garmin site using the option to save it to the PC and the device - or - if it is the same map version, just to the PC.
Then download either or both of the following programs. You are now entering the new world of maintaining your GPS.

BaseCamp MapSource EDIT: having the maps on your PC also allows you to work with POIs, routes, etc. Without the GPS connected. Pratzert wrote: Trips and Waypoints Manager Is this program still around? I could use it to convert some marine waypoints on my handheld from the adm format to GPX.
See: As Motorcycle Mama said above (and you don't wan't to mess with MM! ), Trips and Waypoints is the same as Mapsource. As MM and and CraigW stated, Trips and Waypoints is the same as Mapsource. Mapsoure requires the presence of at least a recognizable Basemap to work.
T&M installs a basemap for you. The method MM outlined also installs the Basemap for Mapsource to work properly. There are a couple of additional ways: 1. Install Garmin Training Center first, and then Mapsource 2. Install on a computer a DVD version of Garmin City Navigator that comes with Mapsource.
Mapupdates for some Asian Nuvis comes with Mapsource. Installing map updates on a computer can install Mapsouce as an option.
